What Does "Living Waters" Mean?

Some congregations are named after people; others are named after places.  Living Waters Lutheran Church is named after a promise.  Jesus made that promise in a conversation recorded in the Bible, in John 4, verses 1–30.

While sitting at a well, Jesus asks a woman to give him a drink.  She expresses surprise, and he replies, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water'" (verse 10.)

The woman asks Jesus to clarify, and he explains, "Everyone who drinks of this water [in the well] will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty.  The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life" (verses 13–14).

What is this water with life-giving power?  In John 7:37–38, Jesus says, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink.  As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"  The gospel writer explains in verse 39, "He said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive."

Have you ever felt drained?  Like you've poured yourself out in work or worry or grief or care for others?  God's spring of living waters is always bubbling up, able to refresh and restore your spirit.  It's a gift, available if we only ask.

Why Did We Choose "Living Waters"?

Choosing a name was an early assignment for our first pastor, Dennis Heaney, when he was asked to lead the development of a new congregation in 1992.  He wanted a name that signified movement and life in the Christian journey of faith.  He also wanted a name that would emphasize God's gracious activity and gifts to us in the sacraments (baptism and Holy Communion.)

Pastor Heaney settled on the name Living Waters because it fulfills all those objectives.  It reminds us that God continually restores and renews us with the "living waters" of the Holy Spirit—given by God's grace, not because we have earned this gift.  We begin to receive this gift through the waters of our baptism into the Christian faith.

It is also not a coincidence that Living Waters serves a "watery" location—near the boundary of Crystal Lake and Lake in the Hills, and not far from the Fox River.  If you find yourself swimming in a lake or fishing in a river—these or others—remember God's promise of living waters!

What Does the Living Waters Logo Mean?

The logo for Living Waters Lutheran Church puts the meaning of our name into pictures.  Every element of the logo has significance:

bulletThe orb (circle around the logo) represents God's creation and encircling care for us.
bulletThe fish is an ancient symbol for Jesus.  Early Christians who included the Greeks, used the letters of the Greek word for fish, IXTHUS, to stand for the Greek words Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior.  The symbol of a fish also reminds us of Jesus asking his disciples to be "fishers" of people.
bulletThe dove stands for the Holy Spirit soaring over the waters of creation (see Genesis 1:1–2), and entering our lives in the waters of baptism (see John 3 and 1 Corinthians 12).
bulletThe spring bursting up (the fountain), illustrates Jesus' description of living waters as a "spring of water gushing up to eternal life" (see John 4:14).
bulletThe waves stand for the waters of baptism.  Through God's gracious actions, our baptism water becomes a "living water" to cleanse and sustain us throughout life's journey and through eternity.

So when you look at this logo, remember that God continues to work in our lives, creating, redeeming, and sustaining us and we, as a congregation, aim to make God's life-giving work visible in our community.

The Living Waters logo was designed by Rhonda Heaney, a graphic artist in Ingleside.
